Q: How to start a speech?
A: Actually, this question is quite a bit more complicated than a one sentence answer. As we have said before, you must consider the setting, know the topic, and know who the audience is. What is appropriate at a Lion's Club after-dinner setting would hardly be appropriate at a ladies' club lunchen!
Many people like to start a speech with a joke. Be careful here because more often than not, the joke will fall flat. As applies in most situations, know your material, subject, and audience. Act enthused as you approach the podium. You body language will earn you either immediate interest or apathy. Be excited, or if not, act like it anyway!
