Q. How do you persuade people to smile?
A. Smile at them yourself.
Really though, whenever you are giving a speech, some of the most important things to notice are the emotions you are giving off yourself. If you are trying to persuade people to smile but never smile yourself, you won't get anywhere. If your smile seems insincere and fake, you won't get anywhere either. So step number one: smile yourself.
After that, there are a number of things that you can do to encourage people to smile themselves. Keep the speech upbeat; through in a little humor. That's harder than it sounds - run it buy a couple of friends first to test it out. If it's not natural, it won't fly either. Experiment, see what works.
