Help with a speech

by Kayleigh Glynn
(Ireland, Meath)

Kayleigh wrote asking for help with a maid-of-honor speech. The general idea of the speech was fine, but the form was, well, in need of help. If your text is a mess, your speech will be also. I have corrected the text for the question and answer.

Q: I wrote a speech for a wedding from the maid-of-honor's point of view of the couple. I am not sure if it sounds okay, and would like a bit of advice. I had to write it for a college English course. My speech is a follow up from the best man's speech.

A: Thanks to the best man for his lovely speech. Welcome everybody to this lovely place to celebrate Helen's and Alan's wedding. I met Helen in primary school where I used to bully her, but now I am one of her bride's maids. Helen and Alan were also best friends in school, and now they are getting married. It's crazy! It's even more crazy how madly in love they are. Over the past few weeks, I have helped the bride with many tasks, like looking at different locations, ordering invitations, planning decorations, and attending and helping out at the rehearsal dinner, all to culminate in this wonderful event.

I think you will all agree on how stunning she is today. I hope everybody has a great time tonight, especially the wedding couple. Helen, I think you are very lucky to have Alan in your life. Now, will everybody raise their glasses to toast the bride and groom.
